SEO and content creation are another huge consideration. Attracting traffic is an exact science, and we spend a lot of time optimizing our marketing assets and online presence to make sure that we’re appearing as high as possible in search queries relating to our industry. Keywords, paragraph structure, heading tags… it all counts.

We use Semrush and Ahrefs for competitor analysis - to figure out where our competitors are performing better at the domain and page level.

So, I went back to basics, what I did when I started online years ago. I did a serious deep dive into keyword research and competition on SEMrush.

I spent 2 days on it and then set up new Google Adwords ad groups based on the findings. I started my main business with Adwords so have years of experience.

This was February 2018 and we suddenly started getting sales from Adwords and didn’t stop. It was like starting again and has grown steadily from there. Yay!

We’ve been doing an exceptional job commercially for the past couple of years, with no less than a 10% profit margin (at the absolute lowest point) while regularly exceeding a 25% profit margin. This healthy margin is primarily due to utilizing better tracking and reporting solutions like Google Data Studio and SEMrush.

SEMrush is fantastic for tracking SEO success, helping to dictate a viable strategy and competitor analysis.

I strongly recommend doing a quick market study BEFORE stepping into the project. Nothing too fancy! For example, use the SEMRush tool. It’s an SEO tool that gets analytics on search queries on Google.

It is a gold mine. I was able to find out easily if there was a market for macarons online in the US. For instance, buying intent queries like macarons near me or buying macarons had a lot of volumes.

In addition, I was able to check on competitors and dig into what they offer. There were a few, which is good because it proves there is a market. It also helps to start a blog answering real customers' questions, like what do macarons taste like, or the best macarons study in the US.

But I also found out that none had our authenticity twist: Real French macarons, handcrafted by real French chefs trained at Le Cordon Bleu Paris.
