Hello again! Remind us who you are and what business you started.

Hello again! My name is Georgina Lupu Florian (Gina) and I am the founder & CEO of Wolfpack Digital.

We are an award-winning start-to-end web and mobile app design & development company with offices in Cluj (Romania) and Dublin (Ireland), and a team of almost 90 people, with almost 45% women in our team. We are also led & founded by a woman - yours truly, and our company has always offered an inclusive environment, where we believe that great results have a lot to do with having a happy and diverse team.

So far we have launched more than 100 web & mobile apps. Our company is inspired by the symbol of the Wolf: performant, dedicated, community-oriented, agile & playful.

We just had our 8th anniversary, and we had a fun in-person gathering at our office, so I’ve added a photo from our event a couple of weeks ago.

Tell us about what you’ve been up to. Has the business been growing?

In the past year, our company got featured in TechCrunch, and we reached the final of the “Made in Romania” program, backed by the Bucharest Stock Exchange, along with another 49 prestigious Romanian companies from various domains, which was a huge honor for us.

We have worked on various exciting projects in finance, health, beauty, IoT, transportation, etc, a couple of examples being: the No7 Pro Derm Scan app for Walgreens Boots Alliance (with more than 100k users so far), or the BrainCapture app making EEG scans accessible to patients in remote areas of the world.

Our revenue slightly increased in 2022, even though we could feel some of the effects of the tech market correction, with some clients adjusting their business plans or scaling down their teams. We also hired new people, mostly in the second half of 2022, and most of our team is the same as it was 1 year ago.

In terms of growth channels, we find that a job well done leading to recommendations still works best, while a well-expressed online identity helps. We find that our natural preoccupation with being involved in our community and paying it forward (mentoring in hackathons, startup events, etc.) when also expressed consistently through online communication (blogs, social media posts, etc.) makes our brand attractive to people with a similar mindset.

What have been your biggest challenges in the last year?

I would say that the general instability caused by the pandemic restrictions being lifted almost everywhere, coupled with the war in Ukraine, and the stock market variations, was a challenge for our business because it showed its effects in the more dynamic buying behavior of our clients, with both ups & downs, and it required staying agile and adaptive.

Additionally, for me, the past year was all about empowering managers & leaders in our company to become even more autonomous, by letting go of control over certain areas and allowing them the needed space for decision-making.

What I can say is that it was not easy, but I was truly impressed with them, especially when I got to see them outperform me. It’s the kind of feeling that gives you goosebumps in the best possible way.

What have been your biggest lessons learned in the last year?

As a leader, it’s important to create a space for other people to shine, for example by welcoming silence in a conversation with them, and resisting the urge to speak, initiate change, or solve issues. I’m generally a good listener, but timing is everything in this respect.

In the past year, I also learned the importance of advanced risk management, to cover the added volatility in the market.

What’s in the plans for the upcoming year, and the next 5 years?

We want to keep growing sustainably by focusing on start-to-end web and mobile app design and development projects for startups, scaleups, and large companies alike. Our mission has always been to bring performance & beauty to the world through technology!

In the last year, we also opened a branch in Dublin, so we will be focusing on developing our business even more in Ireland.

What’s the best thing you read in the last year?

I loved reading “The Road Less Traveled” by M. Scott Peck - I believe it’s a fantastic read for both personal and professional insights. It changes your perspective on life, by tackling and connecting the essential topics of discipline, love, and spirituality.

Advice for other entrepreneurs who might be struggling to grow their business?

Talk to other knowledgeable people & entrepreneurs about your challenge, they may have the advice to help you solve it. Even if nothing comes out of it, you will at least feel supported and connected, and this will energize you.

Otherwise, grit is very important in business, just as long as it’s coupled with sometimes taking a step back to detach and look at the bigger picture of your business, to see if a certain avenue is indeed worth pursuing further.

Are you looking to hire for certain positions right now?

We are always looking for talented and passionate developers, especially iOS developers at this exact moment. Roles in our company open quite dynamically, so you can keep an eye on our Jobs Page.
