I Teach AI to Professionals and Make $6K/Month
Who are you and what business did you start?
My Name is Nikhilesh.
I am an entrepreneur, teacher and tech nerd.
I live in the city of Lakes also known as Udaipur (India)
I have been doing startups since 2011. My first startup was CvBhejo (mobile-based recruitment platform), we raised funds and exited successfully.
My second startup Vidsaga (a global marketplace to create videos) was profitable.
Currently, I run "AI ML, etc.," an AI-enabled educational platform for senior professionals to learn AI and Gen AI.
My startup story has been covered in almost all renowned newspapers like Times of India, Hindustan Times, Economic Times, Bloomberg TV, Rajasthan Patrika, Dainik Bhaskar to name a few
I am a visiting faculty member for Generative AI at various IITs, NITs, Oregon State University and other prominent colleges.
I am also a Google Developer Expert for AI/ML
How do you come up with the idea for AI ML etc.?
I accidentally come into education.
Actually, I started exploring something to do with/ in AI in April 2022 and it was before the ChatGPT hype.
But I could not relate to any of the problems. It's like AI could solve 1000s of problems but you should also relate to the problem, the technology is solving, right?
As I could not figure out that, I wrote some articles simplifying AI/LLM concepts and posted them on LinkedIn.
Seeing those posts, a head of the department of an engineering college reached out to me and asked to take a guest lecture on LLMs.
I thought it was a good experience and that's where I created a presentation.
The lecture was well received and the students referred me to the friends in another engineering college.
At that time, there was a community - Sparklehood, that approached me to deliver a lecture to its members. The talk was attended by senior professionals.
After interacting with these senior professionals, I got a few queries like - Is it possible to learn AI without Maths? How long does it take to learn AI? What topics are relevant for us to learn?
At first, I gave the usual answers and directed them to the famous AI courses. but I also did a quick research if there were any dedicated courses available for senior professionals
And that's when I realised the problem that the existing courses were not solving the problems of these people and decided to build dedicated courses for them.
Well, I did not have any expertise in teaching or designing courses but what I realised is that I have a natural flair for simplifying complex problems.
Regarding whether people need what I am making, many companies are hiring for senior AI roles like Product Managers, Head of AI, Chief AI Officers, AI Strategy Directors, AI Transformation Lead, etc.
Therefore, Senior IT professionals would learn AI to take up these senior AI roles.
How did you build the initial version of AI ML etc.?
Well, I do not have a structured answer for this question because when I started I did not know how to go about it. So, at first, I started and with time I changed the product as well as my approach to building the product.
Before building the product i.e. course for senior IT professionals, I taught engineering students. So at first, I offered the same course with a few lectures on management.
I soon realised that this is not what people are looking for. They want a more industry focussed course which is short and practical. Also, they did not want generic management topics, they wanted to understand more related to AI implementation.
Therefore in the next iteration, I incorporated these things.
It took me 15 months to completely build this course. I started in May 2023 and in Sep 2024, I would say we achieved 90% of what is needed in the market.
We are now also developing an AI-enabled personalised teacher with self-managing memory.
The AI teacher would help in resolving doubts anytime and instantly. The personalised teacher would adapt to the learner’s learning style and pace. The technology used is “AI Agents with self-managing memory” to achieve this personalisation. AI models (like ChatGPT, Gemini, etc.) do not have long term persistent memory. For example, if you are chatting with ChatGPT and you close that session then ChatGPT does not remember anything in the new session.
However, for personalisation through AI, we need a persistent long term memory. To solve this problem, a few companies started sending the conversation history back to the model. This solved the problem to an extent for initial conversations.
But it became difficult to scale this. The reason - a) there is a limit to the size of the content window b) more content means more money.
Therefore we designed a solution - AI Agent with self-managing memory. In this approach, the AI Agent manages its own memory. It keeps relevant information about the learner and provides answers accordingly.
How did you launch AI ML etc. and get initial traction?
The launch was usual. We did predicted activities. We posted on LinkedIn, startup groups, and Tech communities. Launched on Product Hunt as well.
When we launched, we were not looking for many learners. We wanted to test the course with a few.
Out of all the initial activities, LinkedIn worked the best and we got some 7 learners.
What was the growth strategy for AI ML etc. and how did you scale?
One thing that most people are doing in education is running ads on Instagram and then asking users to attend a free demo. In that free demo, they try to upsell their courses.
Now I understand that a free demo is necessary because learners want to first taste the course content & delivery before buying the course. However, with loads of ads running on Instagram where the course quality is not that great, people do not join even the free demos now.
Therefore I thought, Instagram might not give us a good ROI now.
So instead of running ads on Instagram or any other platform, I started approaching tech communities on LinkedIn & Meetup and offering them free sessions like LLM without Jargon, Building Multi AI Agentic System, Generative AI security and vulnerabilities etc.
These are the latest topics and every tech person finds them interesting irrespective of his/ her specialisation. So, many communities accepted the offer.
For me, this was a very manual effort but ir was cost-effective and actually effective..
In 2024 alone, I delivered 70+ offline and online sessions for communities like Google Dev Fest, AI Security Conference, Wordcamp, Microsoft Reactor, Azure Cloud Community, Sparklehood, TelcoLearn, Future& AI etc.
Well, conducting a session does not convert into immediate sales. The idea was to get people connected on LinkedIn.
And I also started creating videos and started posting on LinkedIn. In a short period, I acquired 12k+ followers.
Still most of the enquiries we get on LinkedIn.
One thing about LinkedIn, you yourself do not know who all are following your content. If you give some 12-15 months to LinkedIn, you can get very surprising results.
What were the biggest lessons learned from building AI ML etc.?
When it comes to starting an edtech startup/ business, education is more important than technology. One should focus more on getting the educational content and presentation right in the initial stages.
Education is teacher-driven, do not try to hire teachers and start an education business. If you are not a teacher then you should have a teacher in your co-founding team.
Nowadays everyone thinks of scale from day 1 but one need not have a clear roadmap from the beginning. Sometimes spending time in the business gives you clarity on how to go about it.
