Hello again! Remind us who you are and what business you started.

My name is Davis, and I’m the co-founder of OneUp, a social media scheduling tool.

Our customers are typically any businesses or entrepreneurs that use social media.

OneUp has been around for a few years now, and we have thousands of paying customers.

Tell us about what you’ve been up to! Has the business been growing?

OneUp has grown significantly since we were first on Starter Story. The most important growth lever for us has been SEO: Writing blog posts that target keywords with decent search volume.

Figure out what your target customer is searching for, and then create awesome content in the form of a landing page, blog post, or video to answer the question that they are searching for.

For example, this blog post targets users searching on Google for “post to Instagram from a computer”:

This post gets about 4,000 visits per month from people searching how to post to Instagram from a computer.

The blog post answers the question and teaches users how to do it, but at the bottom, there is a plug for OneUp, for anyone who wants not only to post to Instagram from a computer but also to schedule posts to Instagram from a computer:

What have been your biggest lessons learned in the last year?

This last year has been crazy because of COVID, and also my wife and I had our first child.

During the early parts of COVID, we had many customers asking to cancel. Instead of just canceling, we offered many of these customers a few months of free use, so they could continue to spread the news about their availability across their social media accounts - for example, a restaurant announcing their status (open, closed, take-out only, etc).

This actually benefited us a lot, as many of those same customers thanked us and asked where they could leave a review. We would send them to our Capterra listing, where we now have over 122 reviews - and most of them positive.

What’s in the plans for the upcoming year, and the next 5 years?

We continue to add new features to OneUp based on customer feedback and strive to make it the best social media scheduler out there.

For example, we have added the ability to schedule Twitter threads in OneUp, something you won't find in other social media scheduling tools like Buffer or Hootsuite.

Right now, it is still just me and my co-founder Vishal, but we are at a point where we will probably need to hire for a customer support role in the near future. Our customer base keeps growing, and it’s getting pretty difficult to manage with just the 2 of us.

Have you read any good books in the last year?

The Indie Hackers Podcast is hands down my favorite podcast. Every single episode gives me some idea or inspiration.

As for books, I recently read The Millionaire Fastlane by MJ DeMarco and How to Be a Capitalist Without Any Capital by Nathan Latka.

I will warn that both books have pretty pompous vibes (the authors love talking about how fancy their cars are), but I still consider both great books for opening your eyes to entrepreneurship and the opportunities around you.

Advice for other entrepreneurs who might be struggling to grow their business?

I know it’s repeated often, but SEO can be so impactful for any business. Most people know that, but still, put it off.

Sometimes SEO can take time, but we have seen cases of ranking a blog post for a target keyword within a day.

Figure out what your target customer is searching for, and then create awesome content in the form of a landing page, blog post, or video to answer the question that they are searching for.

Are you looking to hire for certain positions right now?

Not quite, but in the next 6-12 months, we will probably be looking to hire a customer support rep.
