Growing at a very rapid clip, it looks like my last interview with Starter Story was almost exactly a year ago, in June of 2023.

In last June we did $25,000 in total revenue, and it was just me and one employee. This June we're looking at about $400,000 in revenue and I have 8 full time employees. It might be interesting to see the team breakdown:

  • 1x Me
  • 5x Developers (building the app and creating coding lessons)
  • 1x Video Producer / Editor
  • 1x Admin & Marketing
  • 1x QA & Customer Support

The positioning of the product has remained consistent over the last 12 months, so the writeup surrounding all of that from last year is still accurate, we've mostly been focusing on scaling up our marketing efforts and added a ton of polish to our content and features.

We've only added a moderate number of courses over the last year (about 8, or about one every 6 weeks). We've been focused on continuously improving the quality of the existing courses because quality - quantity.

There are a lot of people out there who want to learn the stuff we're teaching, so we're not in a rush to "go wide" with content. Priority #1 remains to be the best place to learn backend development in Python and Go.
