Hello again! Remind us who you are and what business you started.

James Bates is a seasoned technology executive with over 20 years of experience inventing and managing the development of revolutionary products. Throughout his career, James has been involved in almost every major consumer technological breakthrough, which has allowed him to gain a unique perspective on how AI will change healthcare.

Until December 2015, James ran a $1B business in self-driving vehicle technologies. In late 2015, James had an acquaintance approach him for an investment in a chain of urgent care clinics. James quickly realized that the future profitability of urgent care in its current form was not positive. However, James also realized that more than 60% of the cost of providing care is administrative.

James’s vision was to apply the AI technology used in self-driving vehicles to healthcare and help eliminate the overhead burden on physicians and expand access to care. With an aim to reduce the barrier to healthcare James started his company, AdviNow (Advise Now) Medical, a pioneer in the AI-driven medical world.

Access to healthcare is an increasing global crisis. The aging population and the proliferation of chronic illnesses are exasperating the existing global shortage of healthcare providers. The shortage in the primary point of care clinics is especially acute, as the continuing decline of the profitability of primary and urgent care clinics inhibits most new graduates from choosing this important point of patient population health. The current crisis is not only limited to the out-of-control costs for patients, businesses, and governments as access to high quality and convenient care is out of reach even when patients can afford care.

The true solution to the healthcare crisis is to dramatically reduce barriers that prevent timely diagnoses and inhibit patient’s ability manage chronic issues proactively before any medical emergencies can arise. Politicians have attempted to solve this problem; however, the financial limitations and shortage of providers makes the formula impossible to solve within the current system. Now with artificial intelligence and augmented reality, enabling automation, we can truly solve the healthcare crisis. AdviNow Medical's “On Call” solution holds the key to minimizing costs and patient wait times while improving patient outcomes and overall population health.

The three founding principles of AdviNow Medical (ANM) drive revolutionary artificial intelligence (AI) based products that improve quality while reducing cost. The first principle is to optimize the provider time for diagnosis and treatment while maintaining personal interaction with the patient. Providers are in short supply and the most expensive part of the healthcare engagement.

ANM maximizes the potential automation of the symptom and vitals collection, EMR charting, provider note scribing and treatment, and order entry. This automation allows the provider to focus on the valuable diagnostic and treatment part of the patient interaction. The second principle is the democratization of healthcare. Everyone in the world needs access to healthcare automation, regardless of medical training. By injecting AI and augmented reality (AR) into the patient provider encounter, ANM helps guide a patient with limited formal education to collect all information needed by the provider in order to diagnose and treat anywhere at any time.

The third principle is to improve patient outcomes and satisfaction. ANM prepares a complete work-up of the patient and presents in simple overview screens the potential illnesses, their justification and their most effective treatments. Consistency of care is accomplished across all providers that deliver the best evidence-based medicine at the lowest costs and the shortest times.

AdviNow Medical leverages cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented reality (AR) to automate the processes in medical clinics. In this technology-driven medical visit, the patient uses their smartphone and scans a QR code or receive a text from their medical office. The patient will register and enter their chief complaint. The ANM AI will ask detailed follow-up questions that a provider would ask, collecting important information for diagnosis.

The system will also use augmented reality to guide the patient to take medical measurements on themselves with clinical levels of accuracy with no medical training necessary. If Labs or other images or sounds are needed for the provider, orders are automatically placed. The application will then send the list of potential diagnoses, justifications, and treatments to a physician for review. The patient can complete the visit over a text interaction, video/voice or in person visit to receive the final diagnosis and treatment regimen.

The AI completely charts the patient into the electronic medical record, scribes the notes, orders prescriptions, and performs all other required documentation for the providers, freeing them to see the next patient. This allows the provider to see double the number of patients an hour without feeling frazzled or leaving a heavy workload for later. This process is not only time efficient, but remarkably cost efficient. Utilizing AdviNOW will not only lower wait times and costs, but deliver precise diagnoses, treatments, and outcomes, ultimately increasing overall patient satisfaction.

AdviNOW has signed contracts to deploy to over 1000 clinic locations and is actively integrated into most major EMRs.

What have been your biggest lessons learned in the last year?

Covid has taught us many lessons. Hospitals and other healthcare entities shut down and put everything on pause with the exception of video visits. Although they needed AI to solve their problems, they did not have the staff to evaluate and really solve the efficiency issue of healthcare. We had to learn how to get visibility to complete the evaluations of the platform. Persistence and connections made all the difference!

What’s in the plans for the upcoming year, and the next 5 years?

AdviNOW is currently being trialled by many of the large healthcare companies in the US. Once these deployments happen, everyone will engage with an AI before they speak to a doctor enabling the scaling of medicine for the first time. Truly, the expansion of care will be revolutionized!

Have you read any good books in the last year?

The best book I have read in a while is Future is faster than you think by Peter Diamandis. He goes through the convergence of multiple technologies that will change our future. AdviNOW is a part of this!
